This month’s presentation will be given by Mr. Richard Kane of the National Weather Service at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration located at 192 Shafer Rd., Moon Twp, PA.   Richard Kane is the Warning Coordination Meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh.  He served in the U.S. Navy for six years with tours at the Joint Typhoon Warning Center in Guam, at Fleet Numerical Weather Central in Monterey, CA, and at the Navel Weather Detachment in Patuxent River, MD.  He has served in the National Weather Service (NWS) for the last 24 years as a meteorologist/ forecaster in Greensboro, NC, Albany, NY, and Washington DC.  He has also served as the Science Operations Officer for the NSW at the Blacksburg/Virginia Tech office and has been with the Pittsburgh NWS office since 1996.

Rich has participated in numerous local, regional, and national disaster assessment teams including the 2002 LaPlanta, MD Tornado and the 1992 December Nor-easter.  He has authored or co-authored numerous published research papers.  Some of the topics included:  “The Precipitation Characteristics of Large Thunderstorm Complexes”, “Cloud-to-Ground Lightening Characteristics of  Sever Thunderstorms”, “The Relationship between Cloud-to-Ground Lightning and Heavy Rainfall”, and “Forecasting Heavy Rain and Flooding throughout the Eastern United States”.   In April 2003, he received the “Friends of Education Award” from the western region of the Pennsylvania State Education Association.  Most recently, in February of 2009, Rich was inducted into the “meteorologist Hall of Fame” at the Weather Discover Center in Punxsutawney, PA.  He has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Meteorology and a Master of Science Degree in Meteorology from the Pennsylvania State University.

Directions

The National Weather Service’s office is located in a specially designed split-level building in Moon Twp.  The office is a 10 minute drive northeast of the Pittsburgh International Airport, and 16 miles west of downtown Pittsburgh. 

From the Airport: Take Rte 60 South to Exit 3. (Business Rte 60-Moon). From I-79 North:  Exit 15 (Rte 22/30 West) to Route 60 North to Exit 3 (Business Rte 60-Moon).  From I-79 South:  Exit 16 (Rte 60 North) to Exit 3 (Business Rte 60-Moon).

From Exit 3 (Business Rte 60-Moon) Travel 3.2 miles and turn right on Beer School Rd (Orange Belt.) Travel 1.1 miles to third light and turn left to Broad head Road.  Travel 7/10 mile and turn right on Shafer Rd.  Drive 6/10 mile to 192 Shafer Rd.
